NewTropicalDesign Just started my own design studio ( newtropicaldesign.com ) after working for a few years as a full time in house graphic designer. I thought that for the first few months while building up clients that I would try 99 designs to top up the weekly income. Of course I had people telling me that sites like 99 designs was the worst thing that has happened to the graphic design industry and it creates low quality work. So yes I have seen some terrible design on here but I have also seen some great design which makes me think, why are good designers working for free in the hope of a 1 in 100 chance of getting picked? I have entered 3 contests and made the final of 2. These 2 I have made multiple changes, client says they love it, then pick another finalist. So about 3 hours of work for free. In the meantime my design studio has gone from 3 clients to 10 in the last month. That 3 hours would have been better spent finding more clients or working on my SEO. So, option 1: People live in countries where $200 is heaps of money and they can get by with a contest win a week. Option 2: People learning design/students ( i would hope students realise that this is not how effective branding works ) Option 3: Designers don't know how to get clients so they have to resort to this.
