3 components of the perfect conversion trifecta

This year, Chief Sumo Noah increased email opt-ins on his blog by 4x.

He didn’t do anything unusual.

Step #1 — List Builder pop-up: Generating 5,706 emails in 4 months

First, Noah launched a List Builder pop-up on his site.

To keep it simple, Noah enticed users to give their email with a link to a popular podcast episode.

After a few minutes of optimizing the design, the pop-up looked like this:

Before launching the pop-up, Noah changed 3 key settings:

  • Visibility to display after 60 seconds
  • Only show if a user hasn’t seen the pop-up in 14 days
  • When a user gives their email successfully, redirect them to the popular podcast episode

Once launched, the List Builder pop-up generated 5,706 new email subscribers in four months.

Step #2 — 6.31% click rate with the Scroll Box

Second, Noah created a Scroll Box slide-in unit to drive to another popular page of his website.

His goal was to increase pageviews — without collecting email addresses.

To match the List Builder pop-up design, he changed the colors and font slightly. The end result:

Finally, Noah configured 3 settings:

  1. Showing the Scroll Box on 34% scroll depth
  2. Only show when a user hasn’t seen a Scroll Box in 14 days
  3. Setting success to drive to a page on Noah’s website — no email required

Once launched, the Scroll Box had a 6.31% click rate.

Step #3 — Increasing sign-ups 51.82% with content upgrades

Last, Noah utilized a content upgrade to generate targeted email subscribers.

A content upgrade is a highly relevant click pop-up in the content of a web page.

For example, Noah placed a link to an Amazon ebook marketing pack in a blog post about getting your book #1 on Amazon.

When the user clicks the link, they see a relevant pop-up to enter their email address for the pack.

The high relevance means an extremely high conversion percentage.

The content upgrade is configured similar to a List Builder pop-up. The only difference is the visibility is set to a click trigger instead of timed visibility.

So far, the content upgrade has led to 486 new email subscribers… at a crazy-high 51.92% conversion rate.
